Fall Maintenance Tips | Baton Rouge, LA

The weather is changing, football is in-season, and the pumpkin spice is flowing! Now is a perfect time to make sure your vehicle is ready for that sudden switch to colder weather.

Highly recommended maintenance

• Change your oil!!! Not only is it probably time to change based on mileage, but you should make sure you have the correct oil for the weather ahead (you might want to switch to synthetic)
• Check your tire’s air pressure. Temperature affects tire pressure, and lower temperatures drop that pressure. Make sure you’re at your recommended pressure now, and check again once that first cold front comes in.
• Check your vehicle’s fluids. You want to make sure your coolant, anti-freeze, and windshield wiper fluids are all set, since those are the most used in cold weather. It wouldn’t hurt to make sure your transmission fluid is in good shape.

Optional maintenance

• Clean your car. Normally we perform spring cleaning, but most of us don’t clean our cars as often as our houses! While focused on preparing for winter, now is a good time to vacuum all the crevices between seats and cushions and clean out footwells. A lot may have been dropped in there on summer road trips!
• Check for body damage. An inspection of your vehicle’s body, most importantly the body edges, is a good idea. If you’re heading into snow or icy areas, road salt can eat away at places where your car’s paint or coating has come off. Rust isn’t as big of a problem as it used to be, but it’s still a pain to deal with.
• Clean the inside of your windshield. We normally forget this part because it’s difficult to do, but in the summer heat the plastic components of your dash will release a small amount of chemicals that accumulate on your windshield. If you’ve ever had a foggy windshield on the inside that didn’t respond to the defrost setting, this could be the reason.
